Charted Clinical Psychologist & CBT Therapist
"I believe that spirituality and science are complementary but different investigative approaches with the same goal of seeking the truth ... In this, there is much each may learn from the other, and together they may contribute to expanding the horizon of human knowledge and wisdom"

Services I Offer
As a clinical psychologist I work in a way that integrates evidence-based knowledge and skills. My work is informed by cognitive-behavioural principles. I most often work with people one-to-one (adults and young people), but I also work with young people and their families.

I am an accredited CBT therapist, a qualified EMDR practitioner and I work with Compassion Focused Therapy. I see people for a wide range of presenting difficulties. Specific anxiety problems for example, as well as low mood and depression. I see people also who have combinations of these difficulties.

I work with many presentations of trauma - related to specific events like accidents, sexual and physical assaults or witnessing distressing events. Or trauma arising from challenging childhood experiences that are repeated over time - such as neglect or abuse - or living with family illness and death - or because of parents who were dismissive or prioritising their own needs first for whatever reason.

I can work remotely by video-link if required, or I can see you face-to-face at my home. Do please note however, that my consulting rooms are on the first floor of my house and are therefore not wheelchair accessible. In addition, we have a dog at home.

CBT
I can work with you on problems linked to anxiety and low mood, including phobias, panic, social anxiety, agoraphobia, generalised anxiety, health anxiety, OCD, and PTSD. I can also work with you on issues related to separation anxiety and early childhood trauma.
EMDR
EMDR is a well researched approach for working with post-traumatic stress problems arising from single event experiences such as road traffic accidents, injuries or physical and sexual assault. I also use EMDR to work with issues of developmental trauma.

Private supervision
I supervise CBT therapists and other practitioners. I am an experienced CBT supervisor, having worked with many CBT therapists helping children and adults. I work with therapists in NHS services and privately. I also train supervisors in my academic role at Exeter University.
About me ...
I am a chartered clinical psychologist and an accredited CBT therapist. I also work with EMDR and Compassion Focused Therapy.
I trained as a psychologist at Southampton University 20 years ago. Before that I worked in Financial Services in the UK and internationally. I have also worked as a youth worker and with social services.

In my career as a psychologist, I have spent many years working for the NHS in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS). I have worked with Youth Offending Teams, a secure children's home and prison in-reach services, as well as a number of different community CAMHS teams. My work has included specialist assessment for autism and other neurological conditions, supporting young people during in-patient admissions and working therapeutically with a wide range of presenting difficulties - anxiety, low mood and trauma-related.

Over the last several years I have worked privately with adults across a similar range of presenting difficulties. I am very pleased to support the work of PLE Health at Stroud as a professional partner.

I also have an academic role at the University of Exeter where I have previously led teams that trained CBT therapists to work with children and young people (CYP-IAPT) and a new professional role within the clinical psychology workforce - Clinical Associates in Psychology (CAPs). I continue to support these teams through supervision, teaching and marking.

I am an active grand-father of two young adults - I enjoy cycling, caring for our dogs and making things with wood. I live in rural Somerset where I work from home with my wife who is a psychotherapist.

Buddhist philosophy and teachings are an underpinning bulwark for my personal life and professional practice. I have meditated for over 20 years and regularly study Buddhism and attend retreats. My doctoral research in 2006 investigated the use by clinical psychologists of mindfulness within CBT.
